Varanasi

The city of Lord Shiva, Varanasi, also known as Banaras and Kashi is the oldest city in India, is a very special spiritual destination, and one of the main sacred centers in all of India.

 

Theholy Ganges River flows through the city and much of its culture and traditions are connected with it. It is believed that Varanas was created by Lord Shiva himself around 5000 years ago. The city is mentioned in the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata.Varanasi is one of the most popular sacred places in India where salvation may be achieved through various spiritual practices.

 

The city is relatively small, yet remarkable for its many Hindu temples, among them the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Another special feature of the city are the ghats, (river banks) that hold religious importance. People paying thomage to their forefathers, devotees taking a holy dip in the river water, and kids diving in the same water, come and go along the ghatsthroughtout the day and night. The evening Aarti ceremony at the ghats along the Ganges is an unique spiritual experience that is not to be missed.
